Thirsty goats are NOT an impossible problem in Rwanda

What do rollers, audits, and goats have in common? Everything if you're in Rwanda.

In February 2010 I made my 7th visit to Rwanda in less than five years.  Nothing is better than doing what you're meant to do with people of vision and integrity.  The work of the Itafari Foundation allows all of us to work with people determined to be known by their strength and resilience, not by a genocide that happened 16 years ago.  The past should never be forgotten, but the future lies ahead of us: full of hope, challenges, joy, sorrow and impossible problems which will be solved.

Rollers...

Roto Ball RollerDuring my February trip, I went to Nyagatare to visit the first cooperative to whom we gave goats in 2007.  They call themselves the Power of Love!  They get the need to inspire themselves and are aptly named.  They've had success but also some severe challenges. Water is not always easily accessible.  And goats are thirsty.  The minerals they are given make them thirstier.

To get water to them requires the herdsman to fill jerry cans full of water.  They each weigh about 45 pounds when full.  Can you imagine carrying one for each goat each day over the land of 1,000 hills?  The herd we were looking at has 35 goats.   Can you imagine walking miles and miles each day carrying 45 pounds in your arms?    Understandably, neither can the young herdsman!

But if I've learned one thing in my work in Rwanda it's that you don't keep your problems to yourself; you ask others how they can help you.

Have YOU ever been extremely thirsty?  What do you do?  Get water.  Not so easy for a goat, a young person trying to carry water, or a group of people trying to thrive on their own.  But you can help.  Give us a hand, and literally, the children will do the heavy lifting which you have just made light.

HOW? By using a Roto Ball Roller, which enables a woman or child to move 100 pounds of water EASILY. These Rollers, which only cost $100 each, consist of a round container that is rolled across the ground using a handle, rather than being carried. We have even found a supplier in Rwanda, so this product is being locally made!

Know that by purchasing a Roto Ball Roller you're providing water, helping the cooperative become financially successful, and supporting the local economy. Individuals like you have already donated a total of $1,710.00. Join us.

Audits...

Rwandan Goats

We have 35 goat cooperatives run by child headed households, all with thirsty goats. Each cooperative has been given 15 nanny goats and a billy goat from S. Africa.  Their task:  raise the goats, plant elephant grass for feed, use the manure for fertilizer, run their small business and within about three years become self sufficient.  A huge task - much more so for children raising their siblings.  But NEVER underestimate the power of the human spirit and a big dream to be independent.

Itafari and ASSIST Rwanda (a local NGO) provide oversight, support, and direction to these cooperatives. But, like any good business, they need an audit. What are their successes and challenges? Are they being managed properly? Do they all have land suitable for water rollers? How many rollers does each cooperative need?  How are the cooperatives handling health issues for the goats?

To help us answer these questions, and many more, we are sending our In Country Director to visit the cooperatives, which are located in the south, east and northern regions of Rwanda. The roads are slow and gas is expensive. Our goal is to have a personal visit and audit for half of our 35 cooperatives. We will use these audits to decide how many water rollers we need to purchase and determine any additional assistance or training that is needed to reach our goal of self-sufficiency for each of the cooperatives.

The business of running their business is as critical and important as the actual business. Do you appreciate the necessity of this task? Let your inner auditor be honored and donate any amount. We need $1,500.00 for this audit to done properly.

Goats...

Rwandan child with goat kidCheck out this photo of a boy holding a goat kid. It shows the success of our breeding program at the cooperatives. This goat is one of many crossbred offspring now being raised, the result of interbreeding a local nanny goat and a Billy Boer goat from South Africa.

Thanks to our donors, we have provided breeding goats for all 35 cooperatives. Donors like YOU purchased 230 goats for our cooperatives in 2009! We are continuing this popular program for 2010, but the cost of goats has risen. To cover the local cost of one goat in Rwanda, we have raised our goats to $50 each. Your contribution is still 100% tax deductible and includes a beautiful personalized certificate.

We're buying Roto Ball Rollers to raise water, conducting an audit to raise self-sufficiency at the cooperatives, and interbreeding goats to raise profitable offspring for the child headed household cooperatives.   We need your help to make a difference for the children of Rwanda through these projects.
